An event that changed my way of thinking about my vision of the future by 180°
This article is a basic guideline for me as I live with Parkinson’s disease. The basic idea isis: “I want to be able to stand up and walk around in the future. What should I do to achieve that? If the goal is clear, the means to achieve it become concrete, and anxiety is reduced.
I would like to share with you an episode that gave me such an opportunity.
My future vision is to be the one who stands and walks, and that’s how I started thinking.
In the summer of 2011, while in the hospital, an older woman was admitted to the bed across from the caretaker. According to her husband, the woman was his wife, bedridden with Parkinson’s disease, had severe hallucinations and auditory hallucinations, and was constantly pointing her hand at the ceiling. That event triggered a change in thinking.
I was given a definite diagnosis, and one word from the doctor made me hold my head in my hands, filled with a sense of despair, as my future, which should have been bright, was bleak.
Her husband spoke to me at every visit. I listened as her husband shared his memories of his time with his wife, which he seemed to enjoy.
One day, the husband, who always had a smile on his face, looked as if he was about to cry and said, “I am also in poor health, and since I cannot take care of my wife, I have asked a facility to take care of her.
He said, “I’ve decided to have a facility take care of my wife because I’m not in good health and can’t take care of her. I want to spend time with her.”
I was thinking this after the husband left with a look of extreme sadness on his face.
I don’t want to look sad like I’m about to cry if I ever have a partner.” What can I do now to avoid that kind of tragic ending?”
What do you want to be in the future? Or, what actions can you take to avoid events that you don’t hope to happen?
My way of thinking has made me the person I am today. Rather than being unnecessarily anxious, we have concrete goals and know what action to take.
If you are reading this article, what kind of life do you want to lead in the future? How should you act to realize your future goals?
Or, what kind of life do you think you will hate in the future? And what can you do to avoid the life you don’t want?
Please take a moment to think about this. This may be a good opportunity for you.
